About Raja Ravi Varma

Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) is regarded as one of India’s greatest artists. He was the first to combine Indian mythology with European academic realism, creating imagery that resonated deeply with Indian audiences. His paintings of gods, goddesses, and epics became iconic, and through the establishment of the Ravi Varma Press, he made these works accessible to the public via printed oleographs. His legacy lives on in every print that continues to inspire awe, devotion, and pride.

About Oleographs

Oleographs are multi-color lithographic prints, a technique that flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In India, they became popular for reproducing mythological, cultural, and religious themes — thanks largely to Ravi Varma’s printing press. Each oleograph was made using a labor-intensive stone or zinc plate process, often enhanced with rich pigments and embossing. Today, these prints are valued as collectible artworks and windows into India’s visual heritage.
