Buying premium Indian heritage artwork is a significant investment for any art collector. Thanjavur (Tanjore) paintings are famous worldwide for their rich gold leaf work and iconic relief structures. However, with the market flooded with cheap synthetic replicas, knowing how to spot a genuine piece is vital.

1. Check the Purity of the Gold Foil (22-Karat Test)

Authentic Tanjore paintings use 100% genuine, 22-karat gold foil that never loses its luster over time. Replicas often use synthetic gold paper or metallic paint. Look closely at the artwork from an angle—genuine gold leaf has a subtle, warm, and rich metallic glow, whereas artificial gold looks overly bright, brassy, or plastic-like.

2. Inspect the Emboss Work (Muck Relief Work)

The iconic 3D relief look of a Tanjore painting is created using a special paste made from unboiled limestone powder and natural gum (Muck work). In original masterpieces, this embossing is intricate, sharply detailed, and structurally sturdy. Cheap copies feature flat surfaces or rubbery, thick paint layers instead of traditional limestone sculpting.

3. Verify the Gemstones Used (Jaipur Semi-Precious Stones)

Traditional Tanjore artisans embed genuine, high-quality, semi-precious gemstones (often sourced from Jaipur) into the muck relief work. These stones are cut beautifully and catch the light naturally. Replicas use cheap plastic beads or glass stones that look dull and are often crudely glued onto the surface.

4. Feel the Canvas Base (Traditional Jackfruit Wood)

An original Tanjore artwork is always made on a heavy, durable base—traditionally a solid wooden plank made from Jackfruit or Teakwood. A piece of cotton cloth is pasted onto this board using natural glues before painting. If the back of the artwork feels like thin plywood, MDF, or cheap cardboard, it is a modern mass-produced replica.
