About Pattachitra Art

Pattachitra is a traditional Indian painting style that originated in Odisha and parts of West Bengal. The word Pattachitra comes from the Sanskrit words patta (cloth) and chitra (painting), referring to artworks created on specially prepared fabric using natural colours.

This art form is known for its fine line work, detailed compositions, and strong narrative structure. Pattachitra paintings commonly depict themes from Indian mythology, including stories of Lord Jagannath, Krishna, and episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The figures are stylised, with defined expressions, decorative borders, and a balanced use of colour.

The creation of Pattachitra involves a labour-intensive, multi-step process. The canvas is hand-prepared, pigments are traditionally derived from natural sources, and the painting is completed using fine brushes. This method has been preserved and practiced by artisan families for generations.

At Avyaan, each Pattachitra artwork is carefully curated for authenticity, craftsmanship, and visual depth. These paintings represent a classical Indian art tradition and are well-suited for collectors and spaces that value cultural heritage and handcrafted excellence.
