About The Art Form

PATODA – THE HERITAGE OF SILK

The Art of Patoda silk draws its origins from the small town of Patan in Gujarat about 1000 years ago. Over time the fabric became an intrinsic part of Gujarat’s cultural heritage where it was considered and revered as a symbol of wealth and eternal love.

The Patoda fabric technique also called the Double Ikkat is a unique weaving technique of warp of weft threads that are wrapped to resist the dye according to the desired pattern of the final woven fabric making it possible to bring out the beautiful colours and patterns to life. A Gujarati proverb goes like – Padi Potade bhaat; faate pan fite nahi. It means that a pattern once woven into the Patoda fabric might tear but will never fade away and is etched for life. Thus, making it a symbol of eternity and never ending love.

Traditionally a mother would gift her own Potada saree as an heirloom to her daughter during her wedding for nothing else would describe her love for her daughter while she’s moving into a new family.

Patoda’s depict floral and animal patterns native to the state of Gujarat in geometric settings with vibrant colours that are a treat for the eyes. One has to see and feel a Patoda to truly experience the magic of this fabric.
