The Decorative Plate: What It Is, What It Isn't

A Pichwai plate described as "decorative" by its maker is typically one where the ceramic base is good quality, but the painting materials — underglazes, overglazes, gold lustre — have not been tested or certified as food-safe. This is the case with the majority of Pichwai plates on the market. The pigments and gold compounds used to achieve fine Pichwai detail are often not formulated for food contact.

This does not make them lesser objects — it simply defines how they should be used. A decorative Pichwai plate belongs on a wall, a shelf, a plate stand, or as a centrepiece. It should not be used for serving food or drink.

Can Any Pichwai Plates Be Used for Food?

Some Pichwai plate makers do produce food-safe versions, where the ceramic base and all glazing materials comply with food safety standards. These are typically identified clearly by the maker. If food use is important to you, ask the seller explicitly whether the plate is food-safe, and look for confirmation in writing.

Food-safe Pichwai plates tend to use underglazes applied before the final transparent glaze, which seals the painted surface completely. The gold work in food-safe versions is usually a metallic underglaze rather than an overglaze lustre — which means it is sealed under the transparent glaze and safe for occasional food contact (though hand-washing is always recommended).

Choose a Thematic Thread

The most satisfying collections have internal coherence. You might collect all seasonal Pichwai themes — a monsoon plate, a spring plate, a winter plate, a festival plate. Or you might collect from a single artist's production over time, documenting the evolution of their style. Or you might collect different interpretations of the same motif — five plates, each from a different artist, each depicting Shrinathji differently.

Vary the Size

A collection of identically-sized plates displayed together can feel monotonous. Varying the size — one large plate flanked by two medium plates, or a cluster of small plates around a single large one — creates visual interest and allows the eye to move around the arrangement.

Consider the Display Space

How and where will you display the collection? A wall grouping requires careful planning — plate hangers, appropriate spacing, the right height relative to furniture. A shelf arrangement requires enough depth for plate stands and enough space between plates that each can be seen properly. Think about display before you buy.

Care and Maintenance

Decorative ceramic plates are durable objects that require minimal maintenance. Dusting with a soft, dry cloth is usually sufficient. Avoid damp cloths, which can streak gold work over time. Keep plates out of direct sunlight — prolonged UV exposure can affect certain overglaze pigments.

If a plate needs more than dusting, wipe it with a barely damp cloth followed immediately by a dry one. Never submerge a decorative Pichwai plate in water or put it in a dishwasher. The gold lustre and overglaze detailing are permanent under normal use but vulnerable to prolonged moisture.
